The President wants the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to become a “federal department” and has proposed to transfer the EPA to the Department of Justice, Politico reported on Tuesday.
The move, which the White House has said is in line with the EPA’s existing role as a watchdog agency, comes after Trump’s campaign said the agency needed to be more independent.
Trump said during a March 18 interview with the Wall Street Journal that he would have the EPA “federally” run and that “if the president were to win the election, I think he would do that.”
“I think he’s going to do that,” Trump said of appointing a new EPA administrator, adding, “I think it’s going the right direction.”
The EPA has been under a Trump administration since January.
Trump has previously called the agency a “total waste of money” and said he “would have a tremendous amount of power” over the agency.
